Our health is in our hands
Can we protect our brain health?
World of science is changing.. Recent studies show that the authority of science is being shaken. Such historical errors as the demonization of cholesterol, the promotion of sugar have already caused irreparable damage to the health of generations.
Another very high-profile revelations in the field of drugs for Alzheimer's disease had been published in the Science magazine investigation and it looks like it will be much worse than the Elizabeth Holmes case (Theranos fraud) (1).

"BLOTS ON A FIELD? A neuroscience image sleuth finds signs of fabrication in scores of Alzheimer’s articles, threatening a reigning theory of the disease"
The study published in 2006 which claim Alzheimer's Diease is being caused by Aβ*56, was used as basis in thousands of studies in the past two decades, with countless money being invested into the field to develop medicine under this premise.

However, an investigation published on the journal Science found the evidential image in the result of the study was manipulated to reach the conclusion of the paper.
If the study result was indeed fabricated and that the conclusion was untrue, then all the money invested onto developing medicine based on such claim, as well as all the time spent by experts in the field in developing such medicines during such time, are going to be wasted.

Theories are crumbling, another example shows that now serotonin deficiency is not strongly associated with depression. A recent review came out in the journal Molecular Psychiatry that shattered the mainstream theory of depression and gave hope to those who did not respond to selective serotonin reuptake drugs, but simply to antidepressants (2).

Scientists conducted an umbrella review of 17 papers: 12 systematic reviews and meta-analyzes, one meta-analysis with a detailed study of each patient, one meta-analysis of large cohort studies, one descriptive systematic review, one study of genetic associations and one umbrella review.
It is interesting that since the 50s of the last century in the states there has been a of alternative psychiatry, which also didn't support the serotonin theory and highlighted other causes and ways of its correction.

They call this approach ZEEBRA, made up of the first letters of the following words:
Z - zinc and other minerals
E - essential fatty acids
E - exercises
B - B vitamins and other vitamins
R - recovery, rest
A - amino acids and protein.

We should never forget that so called “Age related diseases” are not just appearing when we get old. We are building foundation for their development from an early age with our nutrition and lifestyle.

All those examples demonstrates the importance of understanding of the role of nutrition from early stages of life.
In a recent guide on the role of lipid oxidation in the development of atherosclerosis, the graph demonstrates a development of a glucose response after eating, alongside with an increase in oxidative stress and a change in endothelial function.

What is the conclusion?
1. Hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus affect lipid profiles in patients;

2. Hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus disturbs the balance of LDL / HDL, causing development of advanced glycation end products, which will cause changes of endothelial cells.

3. Insulin resistance provoked by hyperglycemia and obesity is accompanied by inflammation.

Study suggested to targets glucose lowering mechanisms using antihyperglycemic drugs such as metformin and carbose as well as AGE inhibitors.” (3)

Our last studies demonstrated that even very low dose of Advanced glycation end products cause retinal ganglion cells death, that confirms the connection of glucose uptake on lipooxidation and endothelial dysfunction in atherosclerosis (4,5).

The regulation of carbohydrate metabolism is no longer limited solely to the management of diseases associated with the work of the pancreas, in large studies we are increasingly seeing information about the relationship between high glucose levels and inflammation.

Do you know how are you metabolizing carbohydrates?
